Must Have Been a Dream

I came down
Hit the ground
And looked around
Must have been a dream
Because you were there with me
Frozen like a painting
Way back in 93
When I looked at you
And I said, “Oh, what can this be?”
It was underneath
That old weeping willow tree
Where we laid down our silhouettes
On the grass so green
We took a walk around the hill
Down to the creek
Sat and talked on mossy stones
And I kissed you on the cheek

That was so long ago
But it seems like yesterday

Mamma said, “Boy,
You’re sure to find love one day
Might not come from where you think,
But it’s coming your way.”
How was I to know
Love was living right up the road
A pretty young girl
With a farmer’s tan
And grass stains on her clothes
Daddy said, “Girl
I’m heading on out to work
Gotta drive a long haul today
But I’ll be back in time for desert.”
I remember the sounds
Of the sirens
Racing down to the Dairy Queen
Where a young girl’s daddy died that night
In a small town robbery

That was so long ago
But it seems like yesterday

I came down
Hit the ground
Looked around
Sat here all alone
Not a soul to be found
Got a little bit of light
A guitar and some magazines
Got a few books I like to read
And a few notes I like to sing
Around here the days move slow
The nights burn like kerosene
Plenty of time to think on what you know
And dream of what you’ve never seen
Yeah, I remember
The sounds of the sirens
Standing there in that Dairy Queen
A few dollars in my hand
A smoking gun at my feet

That was so long ago
But it seems like yesterday
